Paying
it
Forward...
                     one day at a time
When I went through the trials of Corbin's death, I made one promise to God; no matter what happens,
I will follow You and be a witness for You the rest of my life.  That's what paying it forward is all about
for me.  God showed me that I needed to share with others His word and have Corbin's illness and
death make a difference in my life.

"So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit
themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good."
                                                                                       1 Peter 4:19

I find at times it is hard to be that witness; but even when I stumble, He is always there to pick me up,
give me the hug I need, and set my feet firmly down...back on the path that I was meant to travel.  I am
forever indebted to my Father in Heaven.  I will continue to "make the climb" when I fall and never,
ever give up.

Because of that, and now that we've completed the task of Team Corbin and gave out an amazing
$24,000 in Corbin's name to students of the LC-M Class of 2009, I wondered what I might do from here
on out...something for him.  I believe I have found my "new purpose" when it comes to the "never-ending
loss" of not having Corbin here.  It's with
The Cure Starts Now.   This is an organization, started by a
family who suffered as we have, that is dedicated to finding a cure for the exact cancer that stole my
precious boy from our family and left a void in our hearts that will never be filled...until we get to
Heaven.

I am proud to say that I am the new director for the Houston Chapter of The Cure Starts Now.  From
their website, this is why I chose them...

"DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) is a disease which strikes at the heart of childhood
and it is a disease in desperate need of a cure. And at the same time, there may be no better
place to start the search for a homerun cure for cancer."

Consider the following:

  • Lung cancer has a survival rate of 80% if
caught in the early stages to less than 5% if
    caught in stage 5.

  • Breast cancer has typically an 80-90%
    survival rate.

  • Leukemia has a 48% survival rate.

  • Less than 10% of DIPG children will live
longer than 18 months from diagnosis.
    Survival is even more rare.
So, from this day forward, to pay it forward, from August 13 (the day he left us) through August 22
(the day God gave him to us) we will have a "fund raiser" where you can either give to me to forward or
go directly to the Cure Starts Now Hero page, scroll down to Corbin's picture, and click on tribute
fund and give there.

The Cure Starts Now/Corbin Burnett

The suggested donation will coincide with the age Corbin would have been as we remember him on his
birthday every year.

August 22, 2010 - Corbin would be 19

If you are able, please give $19 to help prevent another family from losing a child
in such a tragic way.

God Bless!

"DIPG affects the pons portion of the brainstem, rendering nervous system function impossible. Symptoms include
double vision, inability to close the eyelids completely, dropping one side of the face, and difficulty chewing and
swallowing. Unfortunately these symptoms usually worsen rapidly because the tumor is rapidly growing.

DIPG, for all its difficulties, presents an opportunity for all forms of cancer. It is one of the most resistant of all cancers to
chemotherapy treatments; it affects primarily children (whose treatment has historically led to innovations in many other
forms of cancer), and with a "dismal" prognosis, alternatives are few. Put together, these obstacles offer researchers a
chance to revolutionize cancer research and prevention. It is even suggested that a cure to DIPG might result in a cure
for almost every other type of cancer. For this reason,
the cure starts now.

The Cure Starts Now strives to generate the resources necessary for doctors to study DIPG and implement the findings
in hope of curing DIPG, and hopefully all cancers."
